Congratulations! I think <strong>you\u2019re making an excellent choice<\/strong>. And guess what? <strong>It\u2019s surprisingly easy to transfer WordPress.com to WordPress.org<\/strong>, even if you don\u2019t have any technical experience.<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019m going to show you exactly how to do that in this post! I\u2019ll cover two different, but connected, aspects of migrating your site:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>Moving all of your content from WordPress.com to WordPress.org &#8211; <\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>this won\u2019t cost you a penny.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Automatically redirecting visitors from your WordPress.com site to your new WordPress.org site <\/strong>&#8211; unfortunately, this does cost $13 per year. But if you\u2019re serious about migrating from WordPress.com to WordPress.org while maintaining your traffic and search engine rankings, it\u2019s an unavoidable investment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ll divide the guide according to those two goals!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note <\/strong>&#8211; for most of these steps, I\u2019ll assume you\u2019re using a subdomain of WordPress.com. That is, your domain name is something like <strong>yoursite.WordPress.com<\/strong>. If you\u2019re already using a custom domain name like <strong>yoursite.com<\/strong>, you can skip a few of these steps.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s dive in\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>How to Transfer WordPress.com to WordPress.org &#8211; Moving Content<\/h2>\n<p>In this part of the guide, I\u2019ll show you how to migrate all of your content to your new self-hosted WordPress site. Excluding the inherent costs of self-hosted WordPress, this part is 100% free!<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t care about retaining your existing traffic and search rankings, you can consider yourself finished after you complete this section.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Set Up Your Self-Hosted WordPress Site<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019m not going to go through the full process of setting up a self-hosted WordPress site because we already have a detailed guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/how-to-make-a-website\/\">how to create a website with self-hosted WordPress<\/a>. So if you need more help, you should give that post a quick read.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, you\u2019ll need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/best-wordpress-hosting\/\">quality WordPress host<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Purchase your own domain name.<\/li>\n<li>Install the self-hosted version of WordPress.<\/li>\n<li>Pick a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/best-multi-purpose-wordpress-themes\/\">WordPress theme<\/a> for your new self-hosted site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already completed those steps, go ahead and do that now because you\u2019ll need self-hosted WordPress installed to import your WordPress.com content.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Export Your Content from WordPress.com<\/h3>\n<p>Before you can import your existing content into your self-hosted site, you need to export it from WordPress.com. <strong>Makes sense, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To do that, head to your WordPress.com site\u2019s dashboard and go to <strong>Tools \u2192 Export:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg.png\" alt=\"transfer wordpress.com to wordpress.org guide\" width=\"700\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-300x165.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unless you want to shell out $129 for something you can do yourself, make sure to choose the regular <strong>Export<\/strong> and not the <strong>Guided Transfer<\/strong>. Seriously, the process is easy &#8211; you don\u2019t need to pay Automattic $129 to do it unless you\u2019re Mr. or Ms. Moneybags.<\/p>\n<p>On the next screen, make sure to choose the <strong>All content <\/strong>option and then click <strong>Download Export File:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22214\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-2.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-2-300x162.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you click that button, you should see a download start for a file that ends in <strong>.xml<\/strong>. This file contains <strong>all of the data<\/strong> for your WordPress.com site. <strong>Keep it handy because, in the next step, you\u2019ll use it to import your content to your new self-hosted WordPress.org site.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Import Your WordPress.com Content to Self-Hosted WordPress<\/h3>\n<p>Next up, head to the dashboard for <strong>your new self-hosted WordPress site<\/strong>. Then, go to <strong>Tools \u2192 Import <\/strong>and click <strong>Install Now<\/strong> under the <strong>WordPress<\/strong> option:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-3.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-3-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-3-84x60.png 84w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After you click <strong>Install Now<\/strong>, the button should change to read <strong>Run Importer<\/strong>. Go ahead and give that a click:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-4.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-4-300x134.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, you need to choose the file to import. Remember that .xml file from the previous step? Here\u2019s where you use it. Just click the <strong>Choose File <\/strong>button and select the .xml file you downloaded. Then click <strong>Upload file and import:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22217\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-5.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-5-300x110.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the next screen, you can choose which WordPress account to assign authorship to.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, this defines who will be listed as the author on all of the posts you import. Usually, <strong>you want this to be your own account. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So to that end, I recommend choosing the <strong>or assign posts to an existing user <\/strong>option and selecting your own username from the dropdown.<\/p>\n<p>But you can also import your old WordPress.com author account or create a new user.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, you should make sure to <strong>check<\/strong> the <strong>Download and import file attachments <\/strong>box. <strong>Checking this box ensures that all of your media content (like images) gets imported as well. <\/strong>Then, click <strong>Submit:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22218\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-6.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-6-300x146.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And once that\u2019s done, you should see a success message. When you browse to your self-hosted WordPress site, you should see all of your content from WordPress.com:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22219\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-7.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-7-300x126.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the import process <em>should<\/em> work properly, it\u2019s always a good idea to go through and test your site to make sure all the text <strong>and <\/strong>images look right.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Update Your Internal Links<\/h3>\n<p>While your content is now imported, you\u2019re not <em>quite<\/em> done yet. See, there\u2019s still one issue. If you ever linked between your posts on WordPress.com, those links (known as internal links) will still point to your WordPress.com site, not your new self-hosted WordPress.com site. <strong>That is, unless you were already using a custom domain with your WordPress.com site.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at an example. Say you linked to a post called \u201ccool post\u201d. That link will still look something like this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>yoursite.wordpress.com\/cool-post<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When really, you want it to look like this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>yoursite.com\/cool-post<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, you could go through everything manually and update all the links&#8230;but that\u2019s a ton of work if you have a bunch of posts. Thankfully, you can automate the whole process using the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/velvet-blues-update-urls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Velvet Blues Update URLs plugin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To get started, go ahead and install and activate Velvet Blues Update URLs. Then, head to <strong>Tools \u2192 Update URLs. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>Old URL <\/strong>box, enter the link to your WordPress.com site\u2019s homepage. And in the <strong>New URL<\/strong> box, enter the link to your self-hosted WordPress site\u2019s homepage.<\/p>\n<p>Then, make sure to <strong>only<\/strong> check the <strong>URLs in page content <\/strong>option and click <strong>Update URLs NOW:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22220\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-8.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-8-300x194.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And now all of your internal links will point to the proper version of your site!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember &#8211; if you were already using a custom domain name, you don\u2019t need to complete this step.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Step 5: Make Your WordPress.com Site Private<\/h3>\n<p>Because you\u2019re no longer using your WordPress.com site, now is a good time to make it private so that you don\u2019t have a perfect duplicate of your self-hosted WordPress site. To do that, head to the dashboard <strong>of your WordPress.com site<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Then, go to <strong>Settings \u2192 Reading <\/strong>and choose the <strong>I would like my site to be private, visible only to myself and users I choose<\/strong> box:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22221\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-9.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-9-300x122.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>And that\u2019s it for migrating your content from WordPress.com to WordPress.org!<\/strong> If you don\u2019t care about keeping your old search engine rankings and traffic, you can stop right now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But if you do care about search engine rankings and traffic, you\u2019ll need to complete the next section as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>How to Redirect WordPress.com to WordPress.org Site<\/h2>\n<p>To keep your search engine rankings and traffic after transferring from WordPress.com to WordPress.org, you\u2019ll need to set up something called a redirect. <strong>What does a redirect do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It automatically sends humans and search engine robots from your WordPress.com site to your new self-hosted WordPress site. For example, say someone tries to go to:<\/p>\n<p><strong>yoursite.wordpress.com\/cool-post<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a redirect, that person will be <strong>automatically<\/strong> sent to:<\/p>\n<p><strong>yoursite.com\/cool-post<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, WordPress.com does charge money to add a redirect. But if you want to keep your site\u2019s traffic, <strong>there\u2019s no way around paying for this service. <\/strong>Don\u2019t worry, though. It\u2019s not too expensive &#8211; it will only cost you <strong>$13 per year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To set up your redirect, <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/domains\/add\/site-redirect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">go to this link<\/a> and choose the website you want to redirect:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22222\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-10.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-10.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-10-300x152.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then, enter your new domain in the box and click <strong>Go<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22223\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-11.png 700w, https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transfer-wordpresscom-to-wordpressorg-11-300x144.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to fill in your details and pay. <strong>Then, you\u2019re all finished!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any traffic to your old WordPress.com site will now be redirected to your new self-hosted WordPress.org site.<\/p>\n<h2>Wrapping Things Up<\/h2>\n<p>As you can see, it\u2019s pretty painless to transfer from WordPress.com to WordPress.org. Once you get your new self-hosted WordPress site installed and configured, it really only takes a few minutes to import your content from WordPress.com.<\/p>\n<p>And once you\u2019re cruising on self-hosted WordPress, you\u2019ll have a great deal more flexibility over how you use your WordPress site. <strong>Just remember that such flexibility also adds new responsibilities. <\/strong>You\u2019ll need to install some basic plugins to ensure your self-hosted WordPress site runs smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, I recommend you look into our posts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/top-wordpress-caching-plugins-compared\/\">on caching plugins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/best-backup-plugins-wordpress\/\">backup plugins<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designbombs.com\/wordpress-security-plugins\/\">security plugins<\/a>.
