That\u2019s why the error is always shown on a blank page because there is no information about your site as it is not connected to your database.<\/p>\n

Now that we have understood the meaning of the error, we need to find out what is causing the error when we try to open our WordPress site. It could be because of many reasons because errors in database connectivity may have several different underlying causes.<\/p>\n

01. Incorrect Login Credentials<\/h3>\n

For instance, it can be because of the wrong login username and password being used to access the admin panel. If the login credentials\u00a0have changed recently, you will not be able to access your database with the old ones. So your first order of business should be to confirm that the login credentials you’re entering are accurate.<\/p>\n

02. Corrupt Database<\/h3>\n

Another possibility is that the database might be corrupted. The WordPress database can be corrupted by a number of things like installing a faulty or incompatible plugin. Another likely reason might be that the server that hosts your database may temporarily be down.<\/p>\n

How to Fix Error Establishing a DB Connection Error<\/h2>\n

Before fixing the error, we need to determine exactly what is causing the error.<\/p>\n

Method 1: Repair the Database<\/strong><\/h3>\n

First we need to check if our database is okay. If you can see your site normally and get an error when trying to access the wp-admin<\/em> page or get a different error saying \u201cOne or more database tables are unavailable. The database may need to be repaired.\u201d when you try to access your site, these are clear signs that your database is corrupt. Thankfully, your database can easily be repaired using a built-in WordPress feature.<\/p>\n

By default the feature is disabled, so you need to enable it yourself in order to repair your database by going into the wp-admin.php<\/em> file and adding this code:<\/p>\n

This simple code of line allows you to repair and optimize your database. After adding this line, simply navigate to\u00a0www.yoursite.com\/wp-admin\/maint\/repair.php<\/strong>. A page with two similar options will appear – the first option would be the Repair<\/em> option which will repair your database and the second would be the Repair and Optimize<\/em> option which will repair and optimize your database for future errors and keep it stable.<\/p>\n
The Repair and Optimize<\/em>\u00a0error takes more time than the simple Repair<\/em> option so if you’re short on\u00a0time then simply choose the first option.<\/p>\n
Another important thing to keep in mind<\/strong> is that the repair page you just opened after putting the line of code into the wp-admin.php<\/em> file is not secure; as anyone can access that URL without having to login. So make sure you remove that little line of code from the wp-admin.php<\/em> file you put earlier after you have successfully repaired your site. Doing this guarantees\u00a0that no one will mess with your database options in the future.<\/p>\n
Method 2: Change Login Credentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Still no luck on opening your website successfully even after repairing the database? You might want to take a look at the database login settings in the wp-config<\/em> file. Your database login credentials may have stopped working because you might have changed your hosting company or some useful information about your database which wasn\u2019t manually updated in the wp-config<\/em> file.<\/p>\n
Open the wp-config file<\/em> again just like before and find the database login information; it will probably be near the top of the file.<\/p>\n

It shows the name of the database as \u201cDB_NAME\u201d, the login username as \u201cDB_USER\u201d, the login password as \u201cDB_PASSWORD\u201d, and the database host as \u201cDB_HOST\u201d. After going through all of this information, do make sure everything is correct as WordPress won\u2019t be able to connect to the database if any of these values are incorrect.<\/p>\n
You can check your database outside of WordPress by using PHPMyAdmin which is basically a tool for accessing and editing MySQL databases. But be careful when using this tool as it deals directly with your site\u2019s database – there\u2019s a great\u00a0chance of messing things up.<\/p>\n

  1. After logging in from your PHPMyAdmin account, click on your database from a list of databases on your server. Make sure to click on the one which matches the name in the wp-config<\/em> file which you just checked.<\/li>\n
  2. After clicking on the database name, you\u2019ll be seeing a lot of names of the tables in your database. To make sure you\u2019ve got the database name right, find the table named wp_options<\/em> and click on the Browse<\/em> button next to it.<\/li>\n
  3. This will take you to a page where you will be able to see the name, URL, and other general settings of your WordPress website. Make sure it\u2019s the same as it was in the wp-config<\/em> file you saw earlier. If, however, it isn’t, go fix it in the wp-config<\/em> file before proceeding.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    Now that\u2019s it for the database name. Moving on to the password and the username, there are a few ways to check if both of those are correct. One way is to check the already existing login username and password are correct is by creating a simple .php<\/em> file which will test to see whether or not you are able to connect to the database using the login credentials from the wp-config<\/em> file or the existing login username and password. To test, just simply create a .php<\/em> file, name it anything you like and add this code to it:<\/p>\n

    This code allows you to test the connection by going to the URL of the file into your browser. For example, if I set the name of the .php<\/em> file to sample-file.php<\/em> then I\u2019ll use the URL\u00a0www.yoursite.com\/sample-file.php.\u00a0You\u2019ll either get a successful connection or in the worst case, another error with more details, which means your previous login credentials are not working and you need new ones.<\/p>\n
    To create a new database user and password we require using a different tool available in cPanel called MySQL Databases<\/em>. Simply go click on that and under the heading of MySQL Users<\/em> click Add New User<\/em>. This will take you to a new page which asks you for the new login credentials.<\/p>\n
    Once you’ve chosen\u00a0a username and a password, make note of them in the wp-config<\/em> file. Click Create User<\/em>\u00a0to continue. On the following screen, click on Add User to Database<\/em>, choose your new username and your WordPress database and click Add<\/em>.<\/p>\n
    Once you’re done adding the new user to the database, simply update your wp-config<\/em> file with the new username and password. Doing this ensures your database name, password, and username is 100% correct.<\/p>\n
    Method 3: Fix Corrupted Files<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    If completely troubleshooting your database doesn\u2019t even work, the last thing you can try is to fix any corrupted files in WordPress. Many users who failed to identify the underlying problem completely wiped all of their files and the error went away. So that\u2019s exactly what we are going to do now as the error could be because of corrupted WordPress files.<\/p>\n
    That said,\u00a0since we are talking about the main system files, you need to be very careful. The tiniest of mistakes can wipe away your entire site. Before we proceed, it’s\u00a0best to backup all of your data either manually or by using a plugin. The next thing we need is new, fresh WordPress files to replace the old corrupted files that are causing problems for us.<\/p>\n

    1. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress CMS from WordPress.org.<\/li>\n
    2. Unzip it in your drive and delete the whole wp-contents<\/em> folder and the wp-config<\/em> file so there\u2019s no chance of overwriting your current wp-config<\/em> file. Plus all the hard work you’ve put into\u00a0setting up themes and plugins up till now\u00a0won\u2019t be lost.<\/li>\n
    3. After deleting the infected or corrupt\u00a0files, paste the rest of the files into your WordPress root folder using the File Manager<\/em> or an\u00a0FTP client.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
